Lumen Maze – Free Online Laser Mirror Puzzle Game

Rotate mirrors to bounce coloured laser beams into matching target rings. A daily logic puzzle with three difficulty tiers, star ratings, hints and an archive — free and browser-based.

Lumen Maze is a free online laser mirror puzzle game where you rotate mirrors on a grid to guide coloured beams into targets of the same colour. Every puzzle is procedurally generated but guaranteed solvable — the game builds a valid path first, then scrambles the mirrors. Daily puzzles are the same for everyone in the world, so leaderboard stars reflect real skill. It runs on HTML5 in any modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge.

Quick Answer: What Is Lumen Maze?

What is Lumen Maze?

Lumen Maze is a free laser reflection puzzle. Each coloured emitter on the board fires a straight beam. By rotating mirrors between / and \, you redirect those beams until they reach a target ring of matching colour. Puzzles scale from 1 laser on a 5×5 grid (Easy) to 3 lasers on a 7×7 grid (Expert). Solve in the minimum number of moves to earn 3 stars.

How to Play Lumen Maze — Step by Step

  1. Read the emitters.

Each coloured emitter fires a beam in a fixed direction. Every beam is a different colour — pink, teal, and amber.

  2. Find the matching target.

Every emitter has a matching target ring somewhere on the board. A beam can only enter a target of its own colour — mismatched targets stop the beam.

  3. Tap a mirror to rotate it.

Each tap flips a mirror between / and \. The beam path updates instantly with a small animation.

  4. Win by connecting every beam.

The puzzle is solved when all beams land on their matching target rings.

  5. Earn stars.

Solve in the par number of moves or fewer for 3 stars. Solve within par + 3 moves for 2 stars. Anything else earns 1 star. Using a hint costs one star — you always keep at least one.

  6. Advance to harder puzzles.

Easy uses a 5×5 grid with one beam and 3 hints. Medium uses a 6×6 grid with two beams. Expert uses a 7×7 grid with three beams and only 2 hints.

Understanding Beam Physics

The reflection rules are simple but produce surprising complexity:

Reflection: A / mirror sends (dx, dy) to (-dy, -dx). A \ mirror sends (dx, dy) to (dy, dx). A beam moving right (1,0) hits / and turns up (0,-1); the same beam hitting \ turns down (0,1).
Beam direction/ mirror\ mirror
→ right↑ up↓ down
← left↓ down↑ up
↑ up← left→ right
↓ down→ right← left

Beams also stop when they hit a dark wall, another emitter, another beam's target, or the board edge. Beams of different colours can cross each other freely — there is no collision between beams.

Difficulty Levels Explained

Easy5×5 grid · 1 laser · 3 hints · 4 path mirrors minimum · 3 decoy mirrors · 2 walls. Perfect for learning the reflection logic.
Medium6×6 grid · 2 lasers · 3 hints · 7 path mirrors minimum · 4 decoys · 3 walls. Two beams of different colours must be routed into two separate targets.
Expert7×7 grid · 3 lasers · 2 hints · 11 path mirrors minimum · 5 decoys · 4 walls. Three beams, more decoys, less hint help. For dedicated logic solvers.

Winning Strategies for Lumen Maze

  • Start from the target, not the emitter. Trace backwards from the target ring toward the emitter — you often spot the path faster that way.
  • Ignore decoys until you need them. Decoy mirrors are greyer. The solution rarely requires them — start with the path mirrors only.
  • Sort by colour. On Medium and Expert, solve one beam at a time. Trace pink first, then teal, then amber.
  • Watch for beam crossings. Beams of different colours can pass through each other — do not treat them as obstacles.
  • Walls are your friend. A wall near the path can sometimes help narrow options — count the possible incoming angles to a mirror next to a wall; often there is only one.
  • Undo rather than guess. Every rotation is recorded. If a move creates a wrong path, undo before tapping elsewhere.
  • Use hints only when stuck. Hints highlight a mirror that is currently wrong, but they cost one star. If you can solve without one, do.
  • Learn the daily seed. Daily puzzles use a fixed seed based on the date. Replaying the same day gives identical puzzles — use this to study a hard one.
Pro tip — "reverse corner" method: Targets often sit at the edge of the board. A target on the top row needs its beam arriving from below or the side. Look for a mirror one tile inward from that edge — that mirror must be oriented to send the beam into the target. Fix that mirror first, then work backwards.

Why Mirror Puzzles Are Good for Your Brain

Spatial reasoningRotating mirrors in your head — "if I flip this from / to \\, where does the beam go?" — exercises the same mental-rotation skills used in chess and engineering.
Path planningYou learn to plan a full beam path backwards from the goal before making a single tap — a skill that transfers to navigation and logistics.
Working memoryOn Medium and Expert you hold multiple concurrent beam paths in your head — a classic working-memory workout.

Unlike passive entertainment, each puzzle takes 1–3 minutes with a clean end signal. It fits naturally alongside Wordle, Sudoku, and other daily puzzle routines.

History of Puzzle Games Like Lumen Maze

  • Lights Out (1995). Tiger Electronics' classic grid puzzle where toggling a cell toggled its neighbours. Taught the world that grid puzzles could be genuinely tricky.
  • Reflector (2008). An indie laser puzzle that popularised the mirror-and-beam mechanic.
  • Lazors (2013). A mobile physics puzzle that codified "rotate mirrors to hit targets" as a genre.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lumen Maze

What is Lumen Maze?
Lumen Maze is a free online laser puzzle game. You rotate mirrors on a grid to bounce coloured laser beams into matching target rings. Every daily puzzle is the same for all players, so leaderboard scores are pure skill.
Is Lumen Maze free?
Yes, completely free. No download, no sign-up, no in-app purchases.
Does Lumen Maze work on mobile?
Yes. The puzzle board scales to fit any screen, and tapping a mirror rotates it on both touch and desktop.
How do beams work?
Each coloured emitter fires a straight beam. A / mirror reflects (dx,dy) to (-dy,-dx). A \ mirror reflects (dx,dy) to (dy,dx). Beams stop at walls, at other emitters, or at targets of a different colour.
What are the stars for?
Stars measure how close you came to the optimal number of moves (par). 3 stars for solving in par moves or fewer, 2 stars within 3 extra moves, 1 star otherwise. Using a hint costs one star — you always keep at least one.
What is the difference between Daily and Unlimited?
Daily generates the same puzzle for every player worldwide, based on the current date. Unlimited creates a fresh random puzzle every time you press Play.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Completed puzzles, stars earned, hint counts and best streaks are saved locally in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
Can I play offline?
Once the page loads, the game runs entirely in your browser. You can keep solving puzzles without internet until you close the tab.
What are decoy mirrors?
Some mirrors are drawn in a slightly greyer glass to signal they are not on the intended solution path. The solution may not need them — but they still work as regular mirrors if the beam passes through their cell.
How many hints do I get?
3 on Easy, 3 on Medium, and 2 on Expert per puzzle. Each hint highlights one mirror that is currently rotated wrong and costs one star.
Can I replay past daily puzzles?
Yes. Open Archive from the menu, choose a difficulty, and tap any past date to replay that day's puzzle. Your win/loss and stars are color-coded on the calendar.
Does Lumen Maze require any plugins?
No. It runs on HTML5 Canvas + JavaScript in any modern browser. No Flash, no Java, no WebAssembly required.
