USORDLE – Free Online American Word Guess Game (Daily Puzzle)

Guess the hidden US-themed word in 4, 5 or 6 letters. Blue, gold and grey clues narrow it down. Daily shared puzzles, unlimited practice and full archive — free, browser-based.

USORDLE is a free online American word guessing game — a US-themed Wordle variant. Each puzzle hides an American-themed word of 4, 5 or 6 letters: from US towns and states, to American food and slang, to wildlife and sports terms. You have a limited number of guesses. Every guess returns three coloured clues: blue for correct position, gold for correct letter in the wrong position, and grey for letters not in the word. Daily puzzles use the same answer for every player worldwide per length and difficulty. Three difficulty levels, a hint token system, an archive calendar, and spoiler-free emoji sharing make it a complete daily word game.

Quick Answer: What Is USORDLE?

What is USORDLE?

USORDLE is a free American word guessing game in the style of Wordle. Each puzzle hides a US-themed word of 4, 5 or 6 letters. You get 7 guesses on Easy, 6 on Medium or 5 on Expert. Coloured tiles reveal how close each letter is: blue = right letter, right position; gold = right letter, wrong position; grey = not in the word. Daily puzzles are shared worldwide, and an archive lets you replay past puzzles.

How to Play USORDLE — Step by Step

  1. Choose a word length.

Pick 4, 5 or 6 letters on the start screen. Each length has its own daily puzzle.

  2. Pick mode and difficulty.

Daily gives the same puzzle to every player worldwide. Unlimited generates a fresh puzzle each run. Easy gives 7 guesses and 3 hints (theme shown free). Medium gives 6 and 2. Expert gives 5 and 1 with Hard Mode.

  3. Type a guess.

Use the on-screen keyboard or your physical keyboard. Every guess must be a real word from the dictionary — invalid guesses are rejected without costing a try.

  4. Read the clue colours.

Blue = letter correct and in the right place. Gold = letter in the word but different position. Grey = letter not in the word at all.

  5. Solve before running out of guesses.

When you guess the word, the row bounces and the win sound plays. If you exhaust your guesses, the answer is revealed in the end-game modal.

  6. Share the result.

Copy a spoiler-free emoji grid to share with friends. Every player's daily puzzle is identical, so scores are directly comparable.

Difficulty Levels

Easy7 guesses, 3 hint tokens, and the theme is shown for free. Perfect for learning the US word list and getting a feel for the pacing.
Medium6 guesses, 2 hint tokens, no free theme. The classic challenge — the default difficulty most players pick.
Expert5 guesses, 1 hint token, Hard Mode ON. Every blue must be reused in place; every gold must be reused somewhere. Strict — for serious solvers only.

Hint Tokens — What Each One Unlocks

Hint typeWhat it showsCost
ThemeThe category of today's word (e.g. "US Food", "Wildlife", "Sports")Free on Easy, 1 token otherwise
MeaningA short definition with the word hidden as blanks1 token
Reveal a letterOne letter in its correct position1 token
Token management: You start with 3 on Easy, 2 on Medium, and 1 on Expert. Use them strategically — a meaning hint is usually stronger than a letter hint because it narrows the answer category. On Expert, save your single token for the moment you're truly stuck.

Winning Strategies for USORDLE

  • Start with a vowel-rich word. Letters like A, E, I, O, U appear in most American words. A first guess like "STONE" or "HOUSE" tests four common letters in one shot.
  • Prioritise consonants on the second guess. If your first guess revealed no consonants, use a consonant-heavy word next: "BRICK", "PLANT", or "THICK".
  • Watch for double letters. US words like "COFFEE", "TENNESSEE", "MISSISSIPPI" have repeats. If you see one gold letter, remember it may appear twice.
  • On Hard Mode, commit to blues. If a letter is blue in position 3, it stays in position 3. Every hard-mode rule violation costs you a guess.
  • Use the theme chip. If the theme is "US Food", you can immediately rule out any word that isn't food. This narrows the search dramatically.
  • Learn the American spelling patterns. US words end in "-OR" not "-OUR" (COLOR, FLAVOR). They use "-ER" not "-RE" (CENTER, METER). US spellings are the hidden answer, not UK ones.
  • Reset your thinking between lengths. 4-letter games feel very different from 6-letter games. Play 4 and 6 regularly to keep the pattern recognition sharp.
  • Play the daily for both skill and sharing. Since everyone gets the same puzzle each day, comparing results is the real benchmark. The daily streak is the true skill metric.
Pro tip — the "letter frequency sweep": The most common letters in US answer words (across all themes) are: E, A, S, O, R, T, I, N, L, C. If your first two guesses contain none of these, use your third guess on a word like "CRANE" (C, R, A, N, E) or "STOLE" (S, T, O, L, E) which test the most common letters in one shot.

Why Word Puzzles Are Good for Your Brain

Vocabulary expansionPlaying USORDLE regularly exposes you to hundreds of American-themed words you might not otherwise encounter, including regional words, US place names, and cultural terms.
Deductive reasoningEvery guess narrows the search space. Doing this repeatedly with feedback trains the same logical skill used in Sudoku and Mastermind.
Pattern recognitionExperienced players spot letter combinations ("-ING", "-TION", "-OUGH") almost instantly. This skill transfers to reading and spelling.

Unlike passive entertainment, each USORDLE session takes 2–4 minutes with a clean outcome. It fits naturally alongside Wordle, Sudoku, and other daily puzzle games.

History of Wordle and Its Variants

  • Jotto (1955). A pencil-and-paper word game where you guess 5-letter words using bull/cow-style feedback.
  • Bulls and Cows (1970s). The digital version, popularised in BASIC programming demos and later mobile games.
  • Wordle (2021). Josh Wardle's browser-based take became a global phenomenon — 300,000 daily players within months, later acquired by the NYT.
  • Wordle variants (2022–present). Hundreds of themed variants appeared — including UKORDLE (British words), Quordle (four at once), and now USORDLE (American words).
  • USORDLE (now). A full-featured American variant with 3 word lengths, 3 difficulty levels, hint tokens, archive, and emoji sharing.

Does USORDLE work on mobile?
Yes. USORDLE is fully responsive with an on-screen keyboard and touch controls on mobile and desktop.
How is USORDLE different from Wordle?
USORDLE uses American-themed words (US towns, food, culture, wildlife, sports, etc.) instead of standard English words. It also adds three word-lengths (4, 5, 6), three difficulty levels, a hint system with tokens, and an unlimited practice mode.
What is Hard Mode?
Hard Mode is activated on Expert difficulty. In Hard Mode, every revealed clue must be reused in your next guess — if you know a letter is blue, you cannot change it; if a letter is gold, your next guess must include it.
How do hints work?
You get hint tokens based on difficulty (3 on Easy, 2 on Medium, 1 on Expert). Each hint reveals the word's theme, its meaning, or one letter position. Easy mode shows the theme for free.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Daily puzzle progress, statistics, streaks, and saved games are all stored in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
Can I play offline?
Once the page loads, USORDLE runs entirely in your browser. You can keep playing without internet until you close the tab.
Why are there 3 word lengths?

What are the difference between blue and gold tiles?
Blue means the letter is correct AND in the right place. Gold means the letter is in the word but in a different position. If you get a gold letter, you must move it to a different tile next turn.
